Comics: From the Middle Ages to the 21st Century
The 8th Russian Comics Conference ‘The World of Comics’, organised by the HSE Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies, took place online in March 2023. Over the two days of the conference, 44 comics researchers from Russia, France, China, and Malaysia presented their papers on comics history, narratives, visuals, and animation.
HSE University Hosts Syrian Delegation Led by Minister of Education
On October 11, HSE University hosted a delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic at the building on Pokrovsky Bulvar. During the meeting, they discussed education and the continuing cooperation between HSE University and Damascus University.

Why Serious Scholars Around the World Study Comics
What do Maya ceramics and pictures on 18th-century Russian stoves have to do with comics? What are the specific characteristics of Russian, Asian and American comics? How do comics reflect social issues? These and many other questions were discussed at the 7th Russian Comics Conference ‘The World of Comics’, which was held online in March by the HSE Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies.
CSMECCA on the pages of Middle Eastern Studies
The British journal Middle Eastern Studies, a flagship journal for the study of Middle Eastern history and culture, has recently published an article by Associate Professor Denis V. Volkov entitled "Bringing democracy into Iran: a Russian project for the separation of Azerbaijan". The article presents the results of a study which is part of a major international project entitled "The Caspian World: Connections and Contentions at Modern Eurasian Crossroads", carried out under the auspices of Yale University (USA) with the participation of scholars from Britain, France and the Netherlands.
Archaeological excavations and an archaeological school in Agrigento, Italy 2021
Archaeological excavations of the expedition conducted by the Centre of Classical and Oriental Archaeology at the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies, HSE University, were held in the city of Agrigento, on Sicily. The Second Archaeological School, which was based on that expedition, took place from the 4th to the 25th of September, 2021.
‘Our Students Were Lucky to Talk to Top Experts’
University of Hamburg professors Denis Nosnitsin and Magdalena Krzyzanowska delivered a series of online lectures dedicated to the study of Ethiopian manuscripts. The course, which was developed for first-year students of the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies, was held as part of the Digital Professors project. In an interview with the HSE news service, the professors talked about their research, teaching approaches, and impressions of lectures.
Dr Arkadiy Avdokhin secures funding for a major joint Russian-Austrian research project
On 26 March 2021, it was announced that Dr Arkadiy Avdokhin, Associate Professor at the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies, Senior research fellow at the Centre for Medieval Studies, HSE University, was successful in his application for a research grant to fund a 4-year Russian-Austrian project on pilgrims’ inscriptions in Byzantium and Old Rus’. The project has received funding from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) and the Austrian science fund (FWF Der Wissensсhaftsfond).
