Migrations of Ancient Societies: Les migrations en discussion
On the 23rd of October 2020, Valentina Mordvintseva and Jean‑Paul Demoule delivered lectures during the discussion «Les Migrations en discussion» («Migrations in a discussion») in the series of online‑seminars «Géographie historique et géoarchéologie» («Historical Geography and Geo‑archaeology») of the l’École normale supérieure, Paris organized by Prof. Anca Dan.
Jean‑Paul Demoule presented his concept of the migration distribution of Indo‑European languages, arguing it with the data of archeology, comparative mythology, social anthropology, genetics and linguistics.
Valentina Mordvintseva, without questioning the very fact of migrations of ancient societies, using the example of the Sarmatian archaeological culture, gave a critical assessment of the migration model when interpreting the changes observed in material culture.
In the final part of the discussion, an exchange of views with the students and guests of the seminar took place.
