How to Teach Classical Archaeology — Talk by Askold Ivantchik in Phanagoria

Prof. Ivantchik presented the principles of teaching Classical archaeology as part of the general discipline of Classics. The purpose of such teaching is the formation of the archaeologist‑classicist, who not only deeply knows different fields of Classical archaeology, but also is able to freely use written sources. A Master program in Classical and Oriental Archaeology based on these principles has been started this year at the Higher School of Economics.

Leading Russian archaeologists, potential employers of graduate students from the HSE, took part in the discussion and noted the need for such an approach to the training of classical archaeologists and its advantages in comparison with traditional training programs for archaeologists.
