Biblical Studies and the History of Ancient Israel

Библеистика и история древнего Израиля

The Bible is, in a way, a “crossroads” of major literary and religious traditions of Europe and the Middle East. This course gives the student an opportunity to get to know not only the Biblical books as such (together with their historical context), but also those traditions that converged at that “crossroads”: the ancient Near East and the Graeco-Roman world, Judaism and Christianity. A comprehensive study of the fundamental, formative texts of the Western civilization in conjunction with a fundamental education in the humanities (ancient and modern languages, courses on philology, linguistics, general history, religious and cultural history) provides the student with a good educational basis for specialization in various spheres of contemporary humanities, ranging from Oriental to cultural studies.
