Academic conference'Traditional Southeast Asia'
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to take part in the Academic Conference ‘Traditional Southeast Asia: Cultures and Languages’, organized by the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies of of Faculty of Humanities of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) and the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University (SPbU).
Dates: November 16–17, 2026
Venue: Higher School of Economics, 21/4 Staraya Basmannaya St., Moscow
Format: In-person and online participation
The goal of the conference is to discuss a wide range of issues related to the development of humanities research on Southeast Asia, to facilitate the exchange of experience among specialists from different disciplines, and to preserve the traditional scholarly tradition in the study of Southeast Asian languages and cultures.

– Traditional material and spiritual culture of the peoples of Southeast Asia
– Structure of Southeast Asian languages in synchronic and diachronic perspectives
– Ethnolinguistics
– Art of the peoples of Southeast Asia
– Literature
– Folklore
– Religion
– Philosophy
– Archaeology
– Ancient and medieval history
We especially welcome presentations based on the authors’ own fieldwork data, as well as interdisciplinary research bridging multiple academic fields.
A collection of abstracts will be published prior to the conference.

Time limits:
Presentation – up to 20 minutes, discussion – up to 10 minutes
Deadlines:
– Application submission: until September15. Please fill in the application form and send your abstract to eokudryavtseva@hse.ru. The length of abstracts should be 2000–4000 characters, including spaces and references, but excluding figures, photographs, and tables. The abstract formatting guidelines are available here.
– Notification of acceptance: by October 15.
– Program announcement: by November 6.
